Long Beach Resort on Matacawalevu

Long Beach Resort is a small resort set on the point of a glorious white sandy beach overlooking a turquoise lagoon towards the rolling hills of neighbouring islands. This is a good place to settle down with a book, take in the tranquillity and perhaps engage in a few light activities like line fishing, snorkelling, kayaking or trekking to a nearby village. However, amenities, services and food provisions are basic making this a place for backpackers and tolerant independent travellers ONLY.
Accommodation at Long Beach is in 8-bed dormitory style bures for budget travellers and simple thatch bures with shared bathrooms (cold water only). There's one larger private bure with its own en-suite bathroom (cold water only) All bungalows are built to traditional design, alongside the beachfront and set amongst coconut palm trees. The resort has a generator for electricity although this is on at peak hours only.

Mantaray Island Resort on Nanuya Balavu

Manta Ray Island Resort is a modern style backpacker resort managed by a young Australian couple with basic yet comfortable accommodation, lots of organized activities and a keenly managed environmental waste system. Set alongside a gorgeous turquoise lagoon, the focus here is on keeping guests busy.
Accommodation for most travellers is in either a large 32-bed Dormitory Lodge with double bunks partitioned into groups of 4 beds. There are also six rather cramped but never-the-less private Treehouse Huts with communal bathrooms, and two Jungle Bungalows with private hot water bathroom. All accommodation has been carefully built without disturbing the existing trees and whilst none offer beach views, all offer a cool shady and natural environment in this otherwise sun-baked island.
Apart from snorkelling and kayaking in the lagoon, the highlight here is the F$20 snorkel trips to swim with the Manta Rays (in season from May to Oct). The resort also offers fully qualified SSI dive courses and with its warm lagoons and Manta Rays is the ideal spot for beginners. Wake boarding, and tubing, game fishing, night line fishing and massage are available and there's good but unpredictable reef surfing in the summer months of Dec to April, although you will need to bring your own surf board.
The large open plan restaurant at Manta Ray is set on the slopes of the hill with lovely ocean views. Built of natural materials, meals are of mostly European style dishes - there's a lively bar in the evenings and television.

Total Bungalows: 10

Nanuya Island Resort is the only mid-market resort in the Yasawa Islands and offers comfortable serviced wooden bungalows, a beautifully designed fully licensed restaurant and lots of watersports on a sandy point facing the protected lagoon between Nanuya Lailai and Tavewa islands. The beach is gorgeous and there's excellent snorkelling making Nanuya Island one of the best holiday spots in Fiji. With a total of only ten bungalows (2 treehouse bures completed in 2008), this is an intimate setting ideally suited to couples.
The four deluxe beachfront bungalows offer 180 sq ft of living space with a double bed room and two single beds in the lounge, a mini fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, ceiling fan and a large wooden veranda surrounded by landscaped gardens. These are set on the flat overlooking the beach amongst coconut trees and tropical vegetation.
Four traditional style hillside bungalows and two treehouse bures offer smaller living space with a double bed and en-suite bathroom with hot / cold water. These are set on the hillside up steep steps and are not advisable for older couples (can be slippery when wet). The views through the trees though are fabulous.
Also on island are West Side Water Sports, a PADI International Resort Association member with a fully outfitted dive centre with a full range of Scuba Pro gear and running full courses. The two custom made Naiad dive boats, a 9 meter open boat and a 11.3 meter covered boat, give quick and comfortable access to 20 dive sites in a 10 mile radius of Nanuya LaiLai Island.
Diving conditions are dependent upon two major factors: the amount of wind and the temperature of the water, the greater the amount of wind and the warmer the water the poorer the visibility. Fortunately the trade winds run from May to October and the warmest water temperatures are experienced from December to March; therefore each is a trade off and there are fairly consistent conditions year round. On average visibility ranges from 15 meters to 30 plus meters and is dependent on conditions of the day. The coolest water temperatures are from July through to the end of October and are about 25 degrees Celsius. The warmest water temperatures, from December to the end of March are about 29 or 30 degrees Celsius. Most divers find that a 3mm steamer is sufficient in the winter months and a 3mm shortie is plenty for the summer months.
